Clay is a great way to express yourself with the knowledge of molds and coiling. Learn the basic techniques and skills of ceramics to achieve these goals. This unit teaches students how to work with clay by handbuilding and does not incorrporate the potters wheel. This unit consists of five well developed lessons that cover a five week time frame. These lessons include a introduction tile, coil pot, slab bowl, and then a lesson on how to glaze those objects.
The dates and times of this class:
11/9/2015 -3:45-5:00pm
11/16/2015 -3:45-5:00pm
11/23/2015 -3:45-5:00pm
11/30/2015 -3:45-5:00pm
12/7/2015 -3:45-5:00pm
In this lesson the students were introduced to different clay techniques and the process of handbuilding using clay. The students were shown different tools required with ceramics and how they were used. The students were then asked to create their own tile that indroduced them to the class. In doing this they were to add different textures and designs that represented themselves.
In this lesson the students were refreshed on the different tools and techniques used with clay and were then shown how to roll a coil out of clay. The students were asked to complete a coil pot using the rolling technique they were shown. The size range was up to the student and how far they got with the coils in the amount of time offered in class.
In this lesson the students were shown how to use a slab roller to roll out their clay slabs. Once the students had their slabs rolled out they were to come up with a design and use the shape of a plastic bowl to make their mold of their slab bowl. Cutting out different pieces of the slab the students were to arrange their pieces in a way that created the design they had in mind.
In this lesson the students were shown what glaze is and how to apply glaze to their pieces. The students were shown a specific type of glaze and how to use that glaze when it comes to their own work. The students started by applying glaze to their tile created in their first lesson.
In ths leson the students were given a work day to finish up their glazing on their three projects. Their projects would then be glaze fired after this class and ready for pick up the following week.
